How is liposuction performed? - Aria Plastic Surgery

Liposuction is used to remove unwanted fat from .problem areas..areas where fat seems to stay despite weight loss. Most body areas can be treated with liposuction, but some of the most common areas treated in women are saddle bags, the lower stomach area, and thighs. For men, commonly treated areas include the chest, love handles, and abdomen.

There are several liposuction methods that are used,Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL), Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL), and Power-assisted liposuction (PAL). Each has different advantages and disadvantages and your surgeon will pick which one is best for you based on the areas you need worked on and his or her personal preference.

In all of the liposuction techniques, the procedure begins with several small incisions (about ¼ inch long) in the skin which are placed in inconspicuous areas. A solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is infused under the skin to reduce the bleeding and help in the suction process. In the case of Suction-assisted liposuction, a long narrow cannula is used to break up the fat cells and suction them out. It is the most common method used. Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction is a newer technique which uses sound waves to .melt. the fat cells prior to removing them. It causes less trauma to the tissue and is often the preferred method in areas with tougher tissue or scarring from previous surgery. In Power-assisted liposuction, the tip of the cannula vibrates at a rapid speed, mechanically loosening up the fat cells to allow removal with less trauma to the surrounding tissue. Once the process is complete, one or two sutures are placed in the incisions and the patient is placed in a snug post-operative garment that will help to reduce the swelling and promote skin contraction.
