How can I improve the appearance of my scars after surgery? - Aria Plastic Surgery

Scars are an unavoidable part of most plastic surgery procedures and I am often asked what can be done to improve the final appearance of the scars. During scar healing and maturation, there are several things you can do to improve the outcome. They might not be recommended for all incisions, so make sure to ask your surgeon about your individual case.

1. Good wound care. In the early healing phases, it is important that the incision is kept clean and protected to minimize the chance of infection. You might be asked to leave steri-strips on or to change the bandage daily and apply antibiotic ointment. Be sure to follow the advice of your surgeon and ask if you are unsure.

2. Scar massage. This is one of the simplest, yet most effective methods for improving the appearance of a scar. You can begin scar massage after the incision is entirely healed (when no crusts or open areas are present-- usually after 2-3 weeks, but make sure to ask your surgeon when you can start). The technique involves applying firm circular pressure to the skin and underlying tissue for about 5 minutes, 1-2 times daily. You can use lotion first if your skin is dry. The pressure promotes collagen remodeling, decreases itchiness, and makes the scar more pliable.

3. Silicone sheets. Placing silicone sheeting over scars is a well established method for improving their appearance. Currently, there are a number of over-the-counter products available (Neosporin Scar Solutions, Curad Scar pads, and others). The pads stick to the skin and should not be used until the incision has completely healed. It will likely take one to two months before you see significant improvement.

4. Scar-Guard ScarCareŽ. Scar-Guard is a new product that has been proven to improve the appearance of scars. It goes on a liquid and then dries quickly into a thin protective coating. It contains cortisone, vitamin E, and silicone which have all been used independently for scar management in the past. It is used twice daily for several months to improve the appearance of healing scars. Scar-Guard is available for purchase in our office if you are interested.
